Ember was built in Bengaluru, by people who dated in Bengaluru. That matters more than it sounds. Launching a dating app city by city is slower than launching everywhere at once, but it’s the only way the app is any good on day one — a dating app with users scattered thinly across twenty cities is a dating app where nobody has anyone to match with.

So we’re starting with one city and making it dense before we move. More cities follow as Ember grows.

• You see a handful of compatible people a day, not an infinite deck. Fewer profiles, more attention paid to each.
• Matches show what you actually have in common, so the first message has somewhere to start.
• No streaks, no daily-login rewards, nothing engineered to keep you scrolling at 1am.
• Free to match. Premium exists, but it never sits between you and a conversation.

The complaint we heard over and over while building Ember was never “there aren’t enough people.” In a city of thirteen million, there are plenty. The complaint was that you can’t tell which of them are real, which are still active, and which are going to reply. You spend an evening swiping, match with eleven people, and hear back from none — because half those accounts were abandoned months ago.

Verification fixes the first problem. Capping the deck to people who have actually opened the app recently fixes the second. Neither is a clever trick; both are just choices that cost engagement and buy usefulness, which is a trade most dating apps decline to make.
