Why Ember exists

Most dating apps optimize for engagement. We’re trying to optimize for introductions.

A letter from the founder

Hi, I’m Sharath, the founder of Ember.

About a year and a half ago, I found myself doing something a lot of people have been through: installing a dating app, deleting it, installing another one, buying Premium, trying Gold, trying Platinum — then deleting everything and promising myself I was done. A few weeks later, I’d repeat the exact same cycle.

After months of using nearly every major dating app, I realised something. The biggest problem wasn’t that people couldn’t find each other — it was that the products weren’t designed around helping people actually meet. Too much time spent swiping, too many inactive profiles, too many conversations that never started, too much emphasis on engagement instead of outcomes.

At some point I stopped asking “which app should I use?” and started asking “what would I build differently?” That question became Ember.

A few things we believe, as a result. Someone who isn’t active anymore shouldn’t waste anyone else’s time, so Ember prioritizes real participation over inflated profile counts. Dating shouldn’t be a popularity contest, so discovery is built to give genuine people a fair shot instead of endlessly pushing the same small slice of profiles. Subscriptions should be simple enough that no one needs a comparison chart to understand what they’re paying for. And the goal was never endless swiping — it’s coffee, dinner, a walk, a conversation, and eventually deleting the app because you met someone.

We’re not building another social network, another platform for followers, or an app that measures success by how many hours people stay online. We’re building a dating app. That’s exactly what it should remain.

Most dating apps compete for your attention. We want to earn your trust — which is also why Premium is priced to be accessible rather than exploitative. If Ember succeeds, it won’t be because we charged the most. It’ll be because we built something worth recommending.

We’re still early. There will be bugs, features we’ll improve, and things we’ll completely rethink. But one thing won’t change: every product decision starts with the same question — “does this make dating better?” If the answer is no, we don’t build it.

Thank you for believing in Ember. See you inside.

Sharath
